Would You Follow Your Own Business?

May 29, 20264 min read

Introduction:

Let’s make this uncomfortable for a second.

If your business appeared on your feed today as a complete stranger…

Would you actually follow it?

Not out of politeness.
Not because it’s yours.
Not because you know the effort that goes into it.

But genuinely?

Would it stop you scrolling?
Would it make you curious?
Would it feel trustworthy?
Would it make you want to stay?

Because this is the question most business owners never ask themselves honestly.

And the answer explains a lot about why some social media accounts grow… and others quietly stagnate.

Let’s do a proper self-audit.

Business

1. If Someone Landed On Your Page Today, Would They Understand What You Actually Do?

This is the first problem I see constantly.

People land on a page and within seconds feel confused.

The content is:

  • random

  • inconsistent

  • vague

  • trying to do too many things

There is no clear positioning.

Ask yourself:

  • Is it obvious who I help?

  • Is it obvious what I offer?

  • Is my message consistent?

  • Does my content support that message?

Because confusion kills momentum.

Confused people do not:

  • follow

  • engage

  • buy

They leave.

2. Does Your Content Feel Human… Or Corporate?

This is a huge one.

So many small businesses are posting like faceless companies.

Polished graphics.
Generic captions.
Zero personality.

And the result?

Nothing sticks.

Ask yourself:

  • Can people hear my personality in my posts?

  • Do I sound like a real human?

  • Would someone recognise my content without seeing my name?

Because personality is becoming the differentiator online.

Especially now AI has made everyone sound increasingly similar.

People follow people they feel connected to.

Not businesses that sound like instruction manuals.

3. Would You Actually Stop and Read Your Own Content?

Be honest.

Or are your posts:

  • too long without structure

  • visually cluttered

  • saying nothing new

  • overly safe

  • instantly forgettable

One of the biggest problems in social media right now is that businesses are creating content to fill space instead of create impact.

Ask yourself:

  • Does this make someone feel something?

  • Does it challenge, help, or intrigue?

  • Would I pause if this came up in my feed?

If the answer is no, your audience probably isn’t either.

4. Does Your Page Build Trust Quickly?

This matters more than people realise.

When someone lands on your page, they are silently looking for proof.

Proof that:

  • you know what you’re talking about

  • your business is active

  • people trust you

  • you’re credible

Ask yourself:

  • Do I show results or testimonials?

  • Do I share my expertise confidently?

  • Does my page look alive and consistent?

  • Is there evidence that people engage with me?

Trust is often built in seconds.

And weak trust creates hesitation.

5. Is There A Clear Journey… Or Just Random Posting?

This is where strategy comes in.

A lot of pages feel like isolated posts floating around with no connection.

No journey.
No direction.
No flow.

Ask yourself:

  • What happens after someone enjoys a post?

  • Is there a next step?

  • Do I guide people anywhere?

  • Is there a system underneath my visibility?

Because content without structure rarely converts.

Visibility is only powerful when it leads somewhere.

6. Would Your Business Feel Memorable After Someone Left Your Page?

This is the real test.

Not whether someone liked one post.

Whether they remembered you afterwards.

Ask yourself:

  • What do I want to be known for?

  • Does my content reinforce that consistently?

  • Or am I blending into the noise?

The businesses growing strongest right now are not always the loudest.

They are the clearest.

Conclusion

This is not about perfection.

It is about awareness.

Because sometimes the biggest shift in your business comes from stepping back and looking at it through fresh eyes.

Not as the owner.
As the audience.

So ask yourself honestly:

Would I actually follow this business?

And if the answer feels uncomfortable…

Good.

That awareness is where stronger strategy begins.

Because the goal is not just to be visible.

It is to be memorable, trusted, and worth following.
